Orthopedic Dog Bed for Hip Dysplasia and Joint Pain

Hip dysplasia and joint sensitivity make lying down, getting up and resting harder. The surface your dog sleeps on cannot treat the condition, but it can reduce the pressure on hips, elbows and spine during the many hours a day dogs spend resting. This page explains how Kumo and the Jeff&Co Orthopedic Mattress are built and which size to choose.

How Kumo supports dogs with hip dysplasia

  • High-density memory foam (40 kg/m³) on a supportive foam base: it spreads weight evenly and relieves pressure on hips and elbows.
  • Multi-layer structure, 10 to 13 cm thick depending on size: deep, stable support that does not let the dog sink too far.
  • Flat, stable surface: unlike soft, bulging cushions that deform under weight, it lets your dog stretch out fully and rest in a natural position.
  • Low-profile bed on a raised wooden base, with velcro strips that stop the mattress from slipping when your dog gets on and off.
  • Removable, washable cover, for everyday hygiene.

Which size?

Choose the size that lets your dog lie fully stretched out. Large breeds that are often affected by hip dysplasia, such as German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever, usually fit size L. All dimensions are listed below.

A bed is part of the picture, not the cure

Hip dysplasia is managed with your vet: weight control, suitable exercise, medication or physiotherapy when needed. An orthopedic bed is a comfortable, supportive place to rest, and it does not replace veterinary care.

Mattress construction

Multi-layer orthopedic structure: a supportive foam base topped with high-density memory foam (40 kg/m³), CertiPUR® certified. Total thickness is 10 to 13 cm depending on size. It spreads weight evenly, relieves pressure on joints such as hips and elbows and supports natural spinal alignment, for puppies, adult and senior dogs.

Cover fabric

Removable cover in a tightly woven technical fabric, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. It is tested for over 105,000 abrasion cycles, pilling resistance grade 4–5, colour fastness grade 4–5, bursting strength over 700 kPa and seam stability of 1 mm. The cover opens with a zip on the underside, and velcro strips on the base keep the mattress in place. Recycled fabrics are certified under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS).

Care

Remove the cover and machine wash it (cold wash recommended), then air dry. Hair does not get trapped in the weave, so it can be brushed away day to day.

Made in Italy

Each bed is produced in Italy by manufacturers specialised in premium bedding, and the wooden structures are made in Italy with local manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

Is memory foam good for dogs with hip dysplasia?

Orthopedic memory foam is commonly chosen for dogs with joint problems because it adapts to the body and spreads weight, reducing pressure points on hips and elbows. Kumo uses high-density foam (40 kg/m³) over a firmer support layer so it does not collapse under the dog’s weight.

How is the Kumo mattress built?

It has a multi-layer orthopedic structure: a supportive foam base with a high-density memory foam top layer (40 kg/m³), 10 to 13 cm thick depending on size.

Is Kumo suitable for senior dogs and puppies?

Yes. The stable support suits senior dogs that need pressure relief and puppies during growth, in the size that fits the adult weight of the breed.

Which size should I choose for a large dog with hip dysplasia?

Size L is for dogs from about 30 kg, for example German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever. Choose the size that lets your dog lie fully stretched out.

Does the mattress slip when my dog gets on and off?

Velcro strips on the base keep the mattress in place.

Are the materials safe?

The fabrics and the foam are certified (OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and CertiPUR®), tested for harmful substances and low in emissions.

Can the cover be washed?

Yes. Remove it and machine wash it (cold wash recommended), then air dry.

Where is Kumo made?

Kumo is produced in Italy by manufacturers specialised in premium bedding, with wooden structures made in Italy by local manufacturers.

Can I buy only the mattress?

Yes. The Orthopedic Mattress is sold on its own, and spare covers are available in sizes S, M and L.
